Please join FIBA on Monday, November 28th at 5:30pm at Nightbird Books for a short meeting to organize our Holiday Bingo Card. We will also discuss new members for our Board of Directors and ask for volunteers to organize yearly events. Our current board is running out of steam and we need new energy.

The Bingo Event will run from December 15th- 24th. To appear as a square on the card, we need a donation of some form for prizes. Examples would be an item from your business or several small gift certificates. We prefer lots of winners of moderate prizes over one large prize. Information from last year’s event is on our website. If your business isn’t really able to provide a prize (i.e. architecture firm), join us any way to discuss how you can be included.

If you want to participate, but cannot attend the meeting, please contact us before November 28th.

Please use your email lists, facebook pages, etc to encourage attendance at the meeting. New members can join that evening and participate in the event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance announces Fayetteville Unchained, Nov 13-20
Organization urges locals to shop locally this holiday season

Fayetteville, Ark. (November 9, 2010) - The holiday shopping season is fast approaching, and the Fayetteville Business Alliance is urging local shoppers to keep local, independent businesses in mind when they buy for their loved ones this year.

FIBA is hoping to raise awareness about he importance of shopping locally with an event called Fayetteville Unchained, scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving, Nov. 13-20.

“We’re hoping to have a week to celebrate what our local, independent business bring to our community, and to remind people that when they patronize these businesses, it really is much better for the local economy.” said co-founder of FIBA and Nightbird Books owner Lisa Sharp.

FIBA estimates that over 20% more money stays in the community when consumers shop at a local, independent business than when they spend the same amount of money with a national chain.

In order to encourage consumers to visit their local, independent businesses during Fayetteville Unchained week, FIBA has organized an “Indie Bingo” game this year. Locals can pick up a bingo card at several participating businesses, visit 5 businesses on the card in a row to “bingo,” and be entered to win gift certificates, and other prizes from local businesses.

“We wanted to do something fun this year that really encouraged folks to stop by and see what their local businesses have to offer,” Sharp said. “We feel like these unique, local places are so important to what makes Fayetteville such a great place to live, and we want people to see how great these places are.”

For more information about Fayetteville Unchained, contact Lisa Sharp at 479-443-2080, email lisa@nightbirdbooks.com, or visit http://www.fayiba.org.

About FIBA: The Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance is a non-profit organization that exists to enhance/support the Fayetteville Community through education and advocacy about the benefits of shopping at independent, locally owned businesses.

For each $100 a person spends in a locally owned business, $45 remains in the community and is reinvested in other local businesses. $100 at a chain generates $13 to re-circulate in the community, and $100 online generates nothing for our community. If all 70,000 people in Fayetteville diverted $100 to a local business that they would have spent at a chain, $2,240,000 (45-13 multiplied by 70,000) more dollars will stay in Fayetteville. $200 each would of course double that, etc. $100 locally instead of online would keep $3,150,000 circulating in our community and collect sales taxes.

The Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance (FIBA) promotes the social and economic benefits of shopping locally. The disappearance of locally owned, independent businesses leaves a social and economic void that is palpable and real, even when it is unmeasured. The quality of life in Fayetteville changes in ways that seem subtle but the changes in the nature of our community are profound. Most people embrace the idea of distinctive businesses with local character, but often forget that the survival of these businesses depends on your patronage.

Buy local whenever possible. Every time you spend a dollar at locally owned, independent businesses you not only enhance the cultural vitality of our community, but also help build a stronger local economy. Help us keep Fayetteville from becoming “Anywhere, USA.”

Join today!
